Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, January 2013

February 1, 2013

A few months ago I got a very nice letter from a long-time listener with a generous serving of recommendations of artists to include on the Pie.  And he wrote that if I only had time to research and play one artist from his list of recommendations that it should be Vienna Teng.  I added healthy doses of many of his suggestions but I’m happy to see that his favorite, Ms. Teng, was voted in at no. 1 this month. Vienna is a charming piano-based songwriter and that song “Blue Caravan” is from her 2010 album Dreaming Through the Noise.

Two San Diego songwriters were voted into the Top 20 this month:  Amber Rubarth at nos. 6 and 10 and Carlos Olmeda at no. 9.

Thanks to everyone who finds the time to send me suggestions and thanks, as always, for listening to Acoustic Pie!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, December 2012

December 31, 2012

On this, the last day of 2012, I make note of the variety, in particular the mix of the old and new, that are voted into the Top 20 almost every month. Krista Detor, a perennial favorite of yours and mine, appears at no. 4 *and* no. 8 this month. When I look at the new artists on the Top 20 list, Adrienne Frailey stands out as one that you might be particularly interested in. And that song, “My Gloomy Poem” at no. 3, is a particularly sweet, piano-accompanied, sad and wistful love-lost ballad. You can check out the CD or MP3 versions of that album Definitely at CD Baby

San Diego songwriters are also represented with a mix of old and new this month: Jeffrey Joe Morin, a newcomer to the Pie, debuts at no. 9 while Berkley Hart, San Diego’s favorite acoustic duo and among the first artists ever to appear on the Acoustic Pie stream, were voted in at no. 11 with a song from their newest album Crow.

Happy New Year, everyone! And thank you for listening to Acoustic Pie and for letting me know what you think.

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, November 2012

December 3, 2012

San Diego songwriters are ably represented in the Acoustic Pie Top 20 this month by Sara Watkins at no. 3 and Nate Donnis of the Donnis Trio at no. 11. For any listeners in the San Diego area, there will be a treat this month: Sara Watkins, San Diego native and founding member of Nickel Creek, is doing a fun show at LeStat’s on Monday, December 17. Sara will be being filmed for a television show called “The Song that Changed My Life” and you have a chance to be part of the live audience. And the tix are only $5, too. That’s a steal. There’s more info under Latest News on Sara’s website.

Paul Simon’s song “April Come She Will” (no. 19) makes me go “Mmmmmmmm”. Such a sweet and tidy song. I love that album, The Paul Simon Songbook. It’s his first solo album, in sparce acoustic arrangements, released in 1965 only in the U.K. while his duo work with Art Garfunkel was starting to take off in the U.S. I got it around 2005 when it was finally released in the U.S. You can read more about it in Wikipedia. The whole album is yummy.

Thanks, as always, for listening and voting for your favorites on the Pie!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, October 2012

November 1, 2012

Please find below the Top 20 songs on Acoustic Pie last month!  Acoustic Pie is hosted on Live365.com and after the listener votes are tallied, they do all of the fancy calculations which bring us the Top 20.  The algorithm looks at how many “thumbs up” a song got, how many people bought the song, and how few times listeners switched stations or logged off during a song.  I think it works pretty well but then I’m a fan of every song on the stream.

Sorry to the local listeners!  Not a single San Diego songwriter was voted into the list this month.

Thanks for reading (and for listening :)!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, September 2012

September 30, 2012

Hello, everyone!

If there’s one thing I love even more than discovering a wonderful new artist, it’s finding that you like her, too!  And that appears to be the case with Kat Goldman, the current Acoustic Pie Featured Artist, who was voted into the no. 9 and 10 spots this month.  She’s a Canadian songwriter, now singing in the Boston area and sometimes remembered for her “near death experience in a bagel shop” (elaborated upon under 2004 in her Wikipedia entry).  She has a beautiful voice, engaging songs, and does a lot of acoustic arrangements in her recorded work.  I think you should take a listen to her newest album Gypsy Girl.

Three artists represent the San Diego singer/songwriter scene in this month’s Top 20:  Nate Donnis at no.11, Lee Tyler Post at no. 19, and Josh Damigo at no. 20.

Thanks for listening (and for reading)!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, August 2012

September 2, 2012

Tom Waits was voted in at no. 1, Paul Simon at no. 7 and Jackson Browne at no. 11.

I love these guys, especially Paul Simon, but I’m very curious: What are the demographics of the listeners voting for these older, more established songwriters? Is it people like me who loved them in their heydays 30-40 years ago? Younger music lovers open to and discovering writers from the previous generation? At any rate, it’s truly exciting to see the classic singer/songwriters being well-received as it is to see the brand new comers to the Pie getting some attention such as Carsie Blanton (no. 8), Liz Longley (no. 9) and Joshua Radin (no. 17).

San Diego songwriters are represented this month by Tom Waits (no. 1), Lee Tyler Post at no. 3 and The Donnis Trio at no. 12.

Thank you for reading and for listening ;)

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, July 2012

August 2, 2012

The listeners have voted and here are the favorite songs for July. Ben Howard at no. 1 and Emily Haines at no. 6 were both unknown to me and recommended by listeners. Thanks for taking the time to write!

I have a terrible soft spot for several of the old Tom Waits “demo” versions on his Early Years albums including the song at no. 8 this month. And Peter Mayer’s “Japanese Bowl” (no. 14) moves me every time I hear it.

Thanks for listening to the Pie :)
