Happy summer, everyone!

A previous Acoustic Pie featured artist has a new album out this month and I’ve added a bunch of tunes from it.  Check out Putnam Smith’s latest release Kitchen, Love when you get the chance.  If you’re the curious type, previous featured artists can be found in the Acoustic Pie Archives.

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, April 2013

May 1, 2013

The votes are in and listeners’ favorite songs for April are listed below!

Being based in San Diego and rather proud of our songwriting talent, it’s always fun for me to note the local artists who make the Top 20 each month.  For April, the smooth-crooning word-master Jason Mraz was voted in at no. 10 and local wunderkind Sara Watkins, all grown up into a  remarkable and beautiful songwriter, charted at no. 20.

Thanks for listening and for voting!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, March 2013

April 2, 2013

Some of my favorite San Diego songwriters were voted into the Top 20 this month: Jason Mraz (at no. 3), Gregory Page (no. 4), and Amber Rubarth (no. 6). Gregory Page is a local San Diego treasure. In fact, I’m writing this newsletter today from Lestat’s coffee house where resides the “Gregory Page Stage”. He’s also a super prolific recording artist (I think I own 19 of his albums and I’m probably missing a few!) but that album All Make Believe might just be my favorite ~ sooooo many beautiful songs. You can sample or download it here at Bandcamp.com.

Live365.com, where Acoustic Pie Radio is hosted, gives me geographical stats of which cities and countries are tuning into Acoustic Pie. When I first started streaming Acoustic Pie Radio, the vast majority of listening hours took place in the San Diego area where I’m based. But nowadays the most Acoustic Pie listeners are, in order by listening hours, in: 1) San Francisco, 2) Los Angeles, 3) New York City, 4) Wheeling – Steubenville (Ohio) and 5) Boston. I really need to look up where Wheeling & Steubenville are… but thanks for listening!

56% of Acoustic Pie listeners are in the U.S. and 13% are tuning in from Canada. Next up, in much smaller doses are Spain, Germany, Brazil, the U.K., Israel and Australia. But people also drop in from over 60 other countries including the Czech Republic, United Arab Emirates, Luxembourg, China and Korea, just to name a few.

No matter where you’re listening, thanks for tuning in and for keeping in touch! I love to hear from you.

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, February 2013

March 1, 2013

The girls in California, they all look the same to me
The way they take for granted living by the sea
They can be your best friends if you don’t expect too much
The girls in California, well they all believe in love.

That’s the opening verse to this month’s no.1 song “Such a Way” by Stephen Kellogg.  The song builds to a beautifully romantic love song as he lyrically searches the country for the girl who moves him “in such a way”.  It’s fun to hear him sing that first verse when he’s singing to an audience of California girls.  He’s uncomfortably aware that he could be offending but the girls, invariably, are enthusiastically forgiving. Here’s a recent example captured on Youtube:

I’ll also mention two newcomers to the Pie on this month’s Top 20:  I met Dulcie Taylor at the FAR-West Folk Alliance get-together last fall.  She’s adorable and her song “Cigarette Smoke” at no. 10 is sweet, nostalgic and unassuming.  Jake Armerding‘s music (at no. 18 ~ I *always* have trouble spelling that name!) was introduced to me by an Acoustic Pie listener and I’m becoming more and more fond of him. Do you like Richard Shindell as much as I do?  There’s a strong similarity in both voice and songwriting.

Sorry, fellow San Diegans, there were no San Diego songwriters voted into the Top 20 this month!

Thanks for voting and for reading!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie Radio, January 2013

February 1, 2013

A few months ago I got a very nice letter from a long-time listener with a generous serving of recommendations of artists to include on the Pie.  And he wrote that if I only had time to research and play one artist from his list of recommendations that it should be Vienna Teng.  I added healthy doses of many of his suggestions but I’m happy to see that his favorite, Ms. Teng, was voted in at no. 1 this month. Vienna is a charming piano-based songwriter and that song “Blue Caravan” is from her 2010 album Dreaming Through the Noise.

Two San Diego songwriters were voted into the Top 20 this month:  Amber Rubarth at nos. 6 and 10 and Carlos Olmeda at no. 9.

Thanks to everyone who finds the time to send me suggestions and thanks, as always, for listening to Acoustic Pie!

Top 20 Songs on Acoustic Pie, December 2012

December 31, 2012

On this, the last day of 2012, I make note of the variety, in particular the mix of the old and new, that are voted into the Top 20 almost every month. Krista Detor, a perennial favorite of yours and mine, appears at no. 4 *and* no. 8 this month. When I look at the new artists on the Top 20 list, Adrienne Frailey stands out as one that you might be particularly interested in. And that song, “My Gloomy Poem” at no. 3, is a particularly sweet, piano-accompanied, sad and wistful love-lost ballad. You can check out the CD or MP3 versions of that album Definitely at CD Baby

San Diego songwriters are also represented with a mix of old and new this month: Jeffrey Joe Morin, a newcomer to the Pie, debuts at no. 9 while Berkley Hart, San Diego’s favorite acoustic duo and among the first artists ever to appear on the Acoustic Pie stream, were voted in at no. 11 with a song from their newest album Crow.

Happy New Year, everyone! And thank you for listening to Acoustic Pie and for letting me know what you think.
