Happy New Year!

San Diego’s own Sara Watkins topped the Acoustic Pie Top 20 list this month with a lovely song from her debut self-titled solo album. Sara is also the fiddler and lead vocalist for Nickel Creek. When she and her bandmates (brother Sean Watkins and mando player Chris Thile) were grade schoolers, I used to see them perform at That Pizza Place here in San Diego. They were the novelty act during the headliner’s breaks (John Moore, a fantastic multi-instrumentalist, flatpicker and songwriter). I remember thinking that Nickel Creek wasn’t a very good name for a band, even a little kids’ band. Shows how much I knew!

Thanks for voting and for listening everyone!

I thought, when I began typing this newsletter, that Lisa Hannigan (voted in at no. 1 this month) was a brand new discovery for me. She’s an Irish singer/songwriter that I stumbled across while browsing eMusic last month. She has an arresting voice and uses intriguing, sparse arrangements in her songs. But I realized while reading her Wikipedia entry this very minute that she is the duet (and sometimes lead) vocalist for Damien Rice’s older works such as the haunting “9 Crimes”. Well, how fun! So she is definitely no newcomer to Acoustic Pie radio after all and, as attested by her spot in this month’s Top 20, her solo work is quite wonderful. You’ll hear four of the songs from her new album Passenger in the rotation on the Pie now and I’ve already chosen a slew of songs from her older album Sea Sew for future play.

No. 6 and no. 18 are from Christopher Dallman’s thoroughly delicious new EP album Light the Love. I love everything Chris does but this latest work is particularly enchanting.

San Diego artists are wonderfully represented on the list by two fine songwriters with gorgeous voices, Nathan Weldon (at no. 9) and Alex Woodard (no. 20).

Thanks for voting and thanks for listening!

What I’m most struck by when looking over the Top 20 songs this month is the wide array of sources from which these songs came to me. I saw Steve Meckfessel (no. 1 this month) at a guerrilla showcase at a Far-West conference. I became captivated with The Swell Season (no. 2) while watching the movie “Once” in which they starred. I’ve been a fan of Kelly Mulhollan’s music (of the duo Still on the Hill at no. 3) since I met Kelly in the 9th grade back in Oklahoma.

Remember the old mp3.com site? Thousands and thousands of free MP3s by independent artists – if you had the patience to wade through them all. That’s where I found Syd (no. 9) and that song “Here’s a Love Song” is one of the longest running songs on the stream, dating from around 2002. I’m glad you still like it!

Many artists (or their labels) send me CDs which I fall in love with. I like to browse eMusic.com for new music. And, lastly, what would I do without my friends and listeners who find and recommend music to me! A special debt of gratitude to Jimmy G. who introduced me to at *least* four of the songwriters on this list alone. If you’re not a fan of Chinese pop ballads (Gigi Leung at no. 17), you have him to thank ;)

Thanks for reading and thanks for voting for your favorites this month!

I’d known about Ellis (at no. 1 this month) for several years but it wasn’t until I saw her live at Sisters Folk Festival last year that I fell in love with her and her music. Definitely one of the most engaging performers I’ve ever seen. That laugh! You can’t help but laugh along. Catch a show if you can and try out the rest of that latest album Right on Time ~ it’s great. Gosh, there are a lot of links in this paragraph. But, if you’re not all clicked out, here are some of my snapshots from that festival.

I’m always drawn to live performance recordings. In the singer/songwriter world they tend to be less production-oriented and more acoustic. There are three live songs voted into the Top 20 this month: Damien Rice (no. 2), Kris Kristofferson (no. 5), The Kennedys (no. 15).

San Diego is represented by the lovely Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek (no. 10), Angela Correa (no. 13), and we always lay claim to Tom Waits, too (I especially love that song at no. 9). Waits moved to San Diego as a child and as a adult had his first paying gig at the Heritage nightclub where he worked as a doorman. According to Wikipedia ;)

Thanks for listening to the Pie and for voting for your favorites!

How fun to see Peter Bradley Adams voted into the top spot on this month’s Top 20. I saw him open for Griffin House this month here in San Diego and it was a wonderful show. I have lots of Peter’s work in the stream; I love his sound and his acoustic arrangements. Griffin is promising an acoustic album soon. I’ll look forward to sharing more of his songs with you.

Do you know who the Court Yard Hounds are (at no. 3)? That’s 2/3 of the Dixie Chicks. The two sisters Emily & Martie wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on their debut album and it’s a beauty.

Three favorite San Diego songwriters made the list: Jordan Reimer (no. 6), Carlos Olmeda (no. 7) and Angela Correa (no. 9).

Thanks for listening! Thanks for voting!

I was never crazy about that Jackson Browne song that was so popular when I was a kid “Doctor My Eyes”. And I remember hearing “The Pretender” in high school but it never struck a chord with me. But the Jackson Browne album coming in at no. 1 this month, the two volume 2008 live album Solo Acoustic, is a gem. I’ve played five of the songs on the Pie so far this year and I’m happy to see that you all are enjoying them, too.

The no. 4 song is from Lori McKenna’s new album “Lorraine” ~ also a winner! One of Lori’s earlier songs also made the list this month at no. 12.

San Diego local luminaries Cathryn Beeks and Carlos Olmeda were voted in at no. 13 and 19. Carlos’s “A Devil Like Me” is an all-time favorite song of mine. You’ll find it on CD Baby here.

I don’t remember “Snake-Handlin’ Man” (no. 11) ever making it into the Top 20 before last month. A lot of you actually change the station when it comes on. The lyrics are provocative, even downright odd ~ a religious framework with some none-too-godly sensual undertones ~ and Dave Carter plays a raucous banjo-style, in-your-face guitar riff throughout. (Hmmm, that’s not a banjo in there, is it?? You can check it out for yourself here. ) Maybe that’s why so many of you change the station?

Snake-Handlin’ Man was also the title of Dave Carter’s debut solo album released in 1995. The word is that he came to hate the album and wouldn’t reprint it when the first run sold out. It’s great though! So there was a lot of controversy after he died in 2002 about whether those of us lucky enough to own the original CD should share it with other fans. I remember reading irate postings on fan forums when a copy would show up on eBay. His partner Tracy Grammer did eventually release a new version as the album Seven which has most of the original songs but in the new arrangements which she and Dave had re-recorded before his death. It is quite wonderful, too, and apparently only available for purchase currently via iTunes .

Two ladies with San Diego ties are in the Top 20 this month: The fascinating Lindsey Troy (currently of LA) at no. 4 and the quirky and prolific Amber Rubarth (resident of NYC, at the moment) at no. 20.

Thanks for listening and for voting for your favorite songs!

Happy Cesar Chavez Day!

Here are the Top 20 Songs for March 2011 as voted on by online listeners. I was happy to see that John Gorka’s “Wisheries” squeaked in at number 20 as it is such a pretty song with the sweetest rhymes. You can read the lyrics here. That album also has the gorgeous WWII themed song “Let Them In”. The origin of the lyrics is a little vague but they were in the possession of a nurse who served in the Philippines during the war. Here’s a video of John performing “Let Them In” .

The storage space for the Acoustic Pie stream is *very* tight right now! Be sure and vote for your favorites (and your not-so-favorites) to let me know which songs I should keep in the rotation (or not :)

Jason Mraz (no. 2) is the only San Diego artist to make the Top 20 this month but what a fine representative he is! A beautiful voice and a beautiful wordsmith, too.

Thanks for reading and thanks for listening, everyone!
